Making a complex laboratory system navigable

An interactive 3D map that turns a distributed automation system into something people can understand and explore.

The situation

Laboratory automation systems combine physical equipment, software services and operational workflows. Their complexity is difficult to communicate through isolated screens or static diagrams.

My role

I independently designed and developed the interactive 3D map, working across UX, product thinking and front-end engineering to turn the physical automation system into a navigable interface.

The intervention

The map represented the system as a navigable whole. It connected the physical layout with the information people needed while working with the product, rather than treating the automation as a collection of isolated screens.

The outcome

The map was later integrated into the main interface of the company’s flagship product, giving the broader experience a spatial layer for understanding the system.
